The Beginning

How Hangry Joes Came to Life

"Hangry joes" started as a late-night craving and a dare — one plate of scorching hot chicken that sparked a revolution in Philadelphia's food scene.

In 2018, founder Joe Mariano was famously "hangry" after a long shift in a Center City kitchen. Unable to find the kind of bold, unapologetic Nashville hot chicken he craved, he pulled out his grandmother's cast iron skillet and got to work. The result was a recipe built on house-blended cayenne, smoked paprika, and a fierce passion for flavor that doesn't apologize.

Hangry Joe's launches as a weekend market pop-up at Reading Terminal Market. Lines stretch around the block, and local food bloggers take notice.

First Brick & Mortar

We open our first permanent location at 28 S 20th St, Philadelphia. Despite a challenging year, the community's support helps us serve thousands.

2021

"Best Hot Chicken" Award
